We have a very simple track plan which allows us to operate two trains at one time and some simple switching.  The track plan was developed on the freeware RTS which is available for free download from the Atlas web site.  I recommend the RTS system for beginners because it’s very easy to use, free, and does the basics pretty well.  Oh yeah, did I mention it was free?

The layout is located in my former basement workshop and its dimensions match the room’s at 8.5 x 8 feet.  The benchwork is modular and consists of two 8x2 main sections connected by 1X4.5 feet shelves.  The total area of the layout' benchwork is 41 square feet.  The height of the benchwork is 46 inches.

Text Box: Baltimore:
Towards the back of the layout (on top of the tunnels) is the city of Baltimore — complete with sky-scrappers and a trolley line (in Red).  The rail track goes under the city via a tunnel.

Text Box: The Port of Oxford:
This is the area of the layout is a small port and allows me to slip in a little model ship building into my layout.  The structures here tend to be higher quality kits (Sierra West or Bar Mills).

Text Box: The “Other Side of the Tracks”:
This industrial area includes a small switching yard and eventually 7-8 industries.  Most of the buildings are created from DPM sections or Walthers kits.

Text Box: Entrance:
The layout room entrance is a set of double doors which are 65 inches wide.  A lift bridge was installed in October, 2006, replacing a head banging duck under.

Text Box: Future expansion points?
I’m currently in negotiations with executive management (my wife) for extension rights.
